ACETA End of Term Report
As Presented at the 2024 AGM
Among new and recurrent projects, the outgoing board addressed when they took office a year ago, was review of the 4th ACETA Industry Convention held in May 2023. The event was highly successful on all metrics bar the crucial financial outcome. The convention program was outstanding, as was the spirit within the delegate group. Entertainment was first class as was the hospitality, setting, and catering, however, the event proved financially unsustainable. Whilst there was a significant member presence, the membership pool that we draw from is not high enough to present a viable convention at this point in time. Therefore, we determined to mothball its presentation until an appropriate time in the future.
However, the impact of the 4th ACETA Industry Convention on program development was invaluable, particularly the debate and consequent consensus achieved on a number of challenges confronting the industry, such as skills shortage, accreditation and standards. Throughout the year a number of program responses have been developed, and all indicators suggest member accreditation will prove a much-needed advantage. For many effective industry peak bodies, accreditation is their most valuable responsibility, not only for the benefit of constituents, but to assist a) acquirers find suitable goods and service providers, b) organizations seeking a compatible trading partner, c) individuals looking for an ideal employer, and d) any situation where a productive relationship is sought. For an industry, accreditation serves multiple purposes, and is a key component in elevating status and maintaining standards, whilst a productive tool in connecting and bringing an industry closer to the corporate world and all levels of government, their administrations, agencies and utilities. The optional ACETA accreditation program will roll out to members in June 2024. Accompanying accreditation, product compliance guidelines are being upgraded and expanded whilst ACETA will consider participation in safety and standards programs established by allied organisations such as Arts Centre Melbourne, Venue Management Association (VMA) and Live Performance Australia (LPA), in the upcoming term.
Last year ACETA filmed four episodes of the Archive of Excellence©, inductees included, Sunbury 1972 for its cultural impact on Australia, musician Phil Manning for 6 decades of sustained musical influence and excellence, Michail Barabasz of Lorantz Audio Services for his unique skills and dedication to creating paper cone transducer since the early 1960’s, and Jon Lemon an Australian Mix and Live Sound engineer who has achieved international acclaim having reached the pinnacle of his craft. Yes, ACETA is steadfastly preserving our industries heritage.
Time and space limitations don’t accord the opportunity to present each and every initiative we currently maintain or plan to develop, all of which wouldn’t be possible without the skills, loyalty and commitment of our people, those who keep the wheels turning at ACETA, and given its limited resources the achievements of your peak body are nothing short of remarkable. I therefore commend to you the outgoing board of management, the executive, and our tireless manager Julie Hinton, who makes sure everything is ticking over and members needs are met.
In the strange and often hostile times we live, unity and belonging are more critical than ever to the realisation of individual and corporate well-being and potential, there are those who do get this and prosper accordingly. However, the greatest challenge to ACETA is certainly not it’s vision or potential, but lack of participation due to individual and corporate apathy, narrow-mindedness and ignorance of what is possible and needed to cross the bridges we will all encounter at some point, until this changes we will remain an isolated craft and not a progressive industry that protects itself.
