Presidents Report to the ACETA AGM - 30th May 2019
With 5 active years behind us, ACETA enters the 6th embarking on its second phase, having spent the first confirming industry realities, prioritising obstacles requiring address and developing resources to effect positive change. Some feel the industry is devolving, demanding intervention to reverse the current landscape and institute development. The only effective path forward is unity and the only effective vehicle is the industry ‘peak body’. Therefore ACETAs second phase is committed to development. Now to the infrastructure that will drive your association in the exciting times ahead.
To underpin development in moving forward, ACETA now has a new administration Stockdale ACS, whose principals Glenys and Richard Gijsbers are with us tonight. Not with us but in our thought is ACETA project manager Emily Dittman currently recovering from significant surgery, we wish her a successful recovery and return to wellness. Our new administration accords us the skills, resources and experience to ensure we achieve our goals. The outgoing board is recommending to the incoming board that they refrain from appointing an Executive Officer in the short term; we suggest the 3 member board executive perform this role for now. The strategy here is threefold a) free up finances for allocation to relevant developmental projects b) establish a cash reserve and c) the executive, supported by the board, are best suited to activate the board developed initiatives that will be competently managed by the new administration. For special one-off projects we can sub-contract appropriate skill on a fee for service basis. The board will continue to develop, implement and oversee policy and programs and form sub-committees to address specific issues, now to the programs that will fuel development.
In the year ahead we have ten specific initiatives to implement, they have been tested for relevance, consensus and viability; in no particular priority order they are:
ACCREDITATION By virtue of application acceptance, ACETA members and associate members will be accredited as an organisation committed to compliance with ACETAs Industry Guidelines, which deals with compliant, ethical trading and behaviour.
ADVERTISING The Accreditation program will be promoted to the industry at its broadest, including exposure on the ACETA web site, media advertising, members directory, through the ACETA forum and at industry events, with the theme ‘when acquiring goods and services from an ACETA member or associate member, or when seeking a suitable representative partner, you are engaging with an organisation that has committed to compliant and ethical trading and behaviour’.
PRODUCT COMPLIANCE ACETA will work in partnership with the Australian Communication and Media Authority (ACMA) on a number of issues including self-regulation potential for ACETA and its bona-fide ACETA membership. The shared ACETA/ACMA goal is to assist all those with compliant intent to achieve it in the most effective manner possible.
Comtest remain ACETAs recommended NATA accredited test laboratory.
SAFETY Product safety is an issue that comes under the jurisdiction of state and territory governments, ACETA will develop a strategy to best address this important compliance issue.
PRODUCTION OF RESOURCE MATERIAL Many will be relieved to know that a simple short form ‘Guide to Product Compliance’ is planned for distribution to members and associate members. It will
contain product listings, their risk category and what has to be tested and how it has to be tested. This publication will remove misunderstanding and confusion, conserving substantial resources. A promotional guide to members and associate members is also planned for release this year.
ACETA FORUM Our medium for disseminating information and knowledge will be seen in numerous guises this year, including industry event attendance, a carefully strategized social media presence, an upgraded web site, monthly industry newsletters and continued editorials in CX magazine.
INSURANCE Without formal representation an industry has no insurance; it is too late when a major issue confronts an unprepared industry. ACETA is the only entertainment technology industry peak body and ready to represent the industry and address relevant issues, including legislation in areas such as the next round of the Digital Dividend.
SKILLS SHORTAGE This year should see the launch of a major initiative the ACETA APTITUDE TEST as a response to connecting our members and associate members with suitable employees. This initiative should take much of the risk factor out of engaging staff and save significant training and even employment agency costs.
MANUFACTURERS MANIFESTO This year will see elevated activity in representing the needs of the creative sector. This will include representation to the federal government departments of trade, industry and small business and as a collective taking advantage of initiatives such as the government innovation program.
TRADE EVENT REFORM ACETA is now working collaboratively with Integrate in the quest to realise the all-encompassing industry trade event you aspire to, and progress is steadily being made.
As you can see there is a lot on ACETAs plate and as the aforementioned initiatives become part of the industry landscape and revert to management, ACETA can deal with new imperatives. Some that have been raised and will be debated include a) the institution of an Annual ACETA Industry Convention b) leadership and mentoring programs c) a focus on the needs of associate members and d) a focus on the creative sector to name but a few.
Thanks for your attention and I move this report be received.
